Midnight Football a brilliat idea, says M'sian PM's officerSaturday, 20 November 2010 17:33

Dato' Latt Shariman Abdullah
Kuala Kedah, Malaysia: Malaysian Prime Minister’s Special Functions Officer Dato’ Latt Shariman Abdullah has suggested that the AFC’s Midnight Football pilot project in Malaysia’s capital Kuala Lumpur be extended to the northern state of Kedah.

He said the Kuala Kedah area and Kedah state have their own challenges and problems that can be solved using football as the platform.

Abdullah said: “We have our own problems in Kuala Kedah and Kedah, such as drug abuse and student truancy. I believe if the Midnight Football concept as the agent of change is used in our areas, we will be able to help our youth get out of trouble,” he told reporters after witnessing the AFC’s RM40,000 donation handover to flood victims on November 14, 2010, here.

Abdullah witnessed himself the inception and progress of the Midnight Football, a new project of AFC to use football as the stepping stone to educational, entrepreneurial, social and character enrichment involving troubled kids under 18 years of age.

He was present during the opening and closing ceremonies of the futsal matches phase of the project which took place throughout October followed by the next phase starting end of November.

The Kuala Kedah leader said he is following closely the development of the multi-agency project and is happy to see the positive change taking place in the participants.

"I am confident with the effectiveness of the AFC's community project piloting in Malaysia.

“I’ve seen myself the transformational effect the project has on some of the kids. Some of them are from a juvenile school while others had been expelled from school but managed to rejoin because of their improvement during Midnight Football.

“This project has received support and encouragement from the Malaysian Prime Minister himself. I’d love to see this project in Kedah,” he said.

During the closing ceremony of the futsal macthes phase on October 22 in Kuala Lumpur, Abdullah told the-afc.com that he had read comments on the AFC's Facebook page from people interested in the development of Midnight Football.

"People from Africa have read about AFC Midnight Football and commented on Facebook, saying that such a concept should be used in their continent too.

"I'm proud that the AFC's project piloting in Malaysia has garnered keen interest from people as far as Africa.

"Malaysia Boleh and AFC Boleh!" he said, which means Malaysia Can and the AFC Can.
